Art Studio

At Forest Hill Nature Preschool, we believe that children learn best when they have opportunities to explore, discover, and create. When children visit the Art Studio, they are given the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and mediums in a relaxed, open-ended environment. Each child visits the Studio once a week, for about 20 minutes. Each month, children will get to meet a real life artist and learn to work with various materials centered around a common theme. Parents, be sure to check out the Art Studio page for brief descriptions of our projects, as well as photos of your child's visit.
Enjoy!

About Miss Theresa :
Miss Theresa has been teaching for 7+ years but this is her 2nd year as an Art Studio teacher. Her background is in art education and early childhood development. She joined us while we were still at Bynum run and fell in love with the students. She loves to paint and get messy in the art room and encourages the students to do the same. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." - Pablo Picasso

At the current time, we are incorporating Process-Art activities and Artist Studies into the children's regular classroom activities as part of our response to the Covid-19 recommendations from the CDC and Licensing. When it is once again safe for us to break out into smaller groups with friends from other classrooms and rotate between staff members who have contact with the whole school, we look forward to re-introducing our full-time Art Studio instruction as a special area enrichment program for all students using dedicated space in the school.
Some of our Projects from 2019/20 |
December is Christmas season!! We started off the month with some drip painting art projects. And they all look so beautiful!! Next we will be making silk Scarves and the kids will be dipping the scarves in an ash solution, then taking paint and dripping a design in the water. When the kids take their scarves out, they will have a beautiful paint stained design on their scarf. The Month will end with a holiday themed craft just for Mom and Dad (or pop and gram, whoever they would like to address it too). But shh.. its a surprise, you will have to wait to see.
January is the start of a new year and a new project. The children will be making Jewelry from Geodes that they will be crushing. I have a large number of Geodes that the kids will take a hammer too and break apart. Then they will pick a small piece from the piece they crushed to make a ring, a necklace, a bracelet or a pair of earrings with. If they would like, they will also pick a colored glitter glue to add a special touch to their project. The next project will be Tile dying with Alcohol ink. The kids will each get a tile and get to choose three colors from my alcohol ink collection. They will drop 3 drops of each color onto the plain white tile and watch the colors spread. To make the colors spread more and blend, they will get the choice of spraying their project or using a droplet to put rubbing alcohol on their tile. I will then spray the tiles with a sealant so that you can use them at home !
February is the month of Love and we have no better way of starting that month then with some clay heart making activities. Each child will get a small ball of clay and be asked to make it in the shape of a heart, using a cookie cutter for reference. After their heart is dry, they may paint it whatever color they like. I will help put a bow and a note on the heart as a gift for the parents. Coming up is a Super Hero Oil Color scene. The kids will take oil pastels and color the sky with different colors, use a piece of tissue paper to blend and then glue on a building scene. After they are done with their paper, I will take a picture of their best flying super hero impression and print it out. The final project will look like your child is flying over the buildings in a super hero cape.
March will hold some collage making and the students will use small fabric pieces to create a scene or small quilt square.
